Some of our students came together to answer the frequently asked questions (FAQs) of international students. The international students who contributed include Duncan Garde (Irish/Zimbabwean), Nazrawit Gebeto (Ethiopian), Hamdi Ataol Oktem (Turkish), Adri Simamora (Indonesian) and Sandeep Wadhwa (Indian). Enjoy their insights!

Do I need to speak Dutch?
Hamdi: Netherlands has a very highly educated, multinational environment. Almost everybody from all professions in the society speaks very good English.
What is the most interesting time of the year in Holland?
Adri: It is hard to define the best of times here in Holland, but people in general love to celebrate the Queens Day in April, where people in all Holland go out for a drink all day to celebrate the Queen birthday. Another one would be when spring or summer time and visiting Keukenhof flower exhibition. You will never see so many beautiful and endless display of flowers in your life ever before.

Is Nyenrode a well known university in the Netherlands?
Hamdi: Nyenrode is known as the best business University of Netherland. Starting from your landing to airport in Amsterdam, every singly person you talk (police, taxi driver etc.) will tell how lucky you are for being a student in Nyenrode.

Does the name of Brooklyn (New York) come from Breukelen?
Hamdi: Yes, The Dutch were the first Europeans to settle in the area and Breukelen in the province of Utrecht in the Netherlands, which was authorized by the Dutch West India Company in 1646, became the first municipality in what is now New York State.

Weather in the Netherlands
Would it be too cold in the winter? Is there anything I should worry about?
Adri: The Netherlands, in general, has a medium climate, so it won’t be that cold in winter. Usually the temperature will drop to 0’C to as low as -10’ C. Wear a proper winter attire and you will start to love the snow that falls in late December or January, when Nynerode will be covered all-white. Simply beautiful!
Hamdi: Winter is very cold in Amsterdam. However, with the highly maintained and adjustable heating system of the campus, usually you can study with your t-shirt in your room in the winter

What is the best way to spent a cold winter with friends in campus?
Adri: For the active, you can always arrange an indoor football match at the gym, or ask some fellow classmates to teach you how to play cricket. Yes, cricket indeed… For the party goer, nothing beats chilling out with friend over wine and cheese while spending the night at one’s place.
