In February 2024, a group of MBA and executive students from the Polish Silesian University of Technology embarked on a study immersion visit to Nyenrode Business University in the Netherlands. This immersive program provided the students with an invaluable opportunity to gain insights into the Dutch business environment, renowned for its innovation, sustainability, and robust economic practices.

The value of the study immersion program

Professor Małgorzata Dobrowolska, University Professor at the Silesian University of Technology, highlighted the immense value this program added to their MBA curriculum. "As a technical university with a focus on new technologies and key transformations such as digital and energy, this trip to Nyenrode was a unique experience for our students. Key highlights from participants The study immersions program featured a blend of academic sessions, corporate visits, and cultural exchanges, each contributing significantly to the students' learning experience. General Grzegorz Grodzki of GH Koncept Ltd. highlighted two standout moments: "The visit to Shimano was enlightening in understanding new trends in the bicycle market and how to adapt to them.

Another extraordinary event was a lecture by Dr. Nicolas Chevrollier, which shed light on Poland's decarbonization process and reinforced my decision to pursue an MBA at the Silesian University of Technology." Hanna Purzyńska, Director of the Materials Research Centre, found the entire program invaluable. "The presence of excellent lecturers with rich business experience boosted such curiosity and interest that the days passed too quickly. Discussions on topics like the 'Renewable energy transition in Poland' sparked debates and continued to influence my thoughts long after the sessions ended," she said.

"It was an amazing experience to be among lecturers and students who are so curious about the world and eager to develop." Krzysztof Szaliński, President of the Management Board at PEC – Gliwice Ltd., observed significant differences between Dutch and Polish business environments. "The openness of Dutch managers to continuously engage with and learn from their partners was striking. Their direct and unrestrained approach to conversations and willingness to improve their skills from every interaction were impressive. This exchange has given me valuable insights that I plan to incorporate into my own business practices."

Perspectives from Nyenrode faculty

Prof. Dr. Haico Ebbers emphasized the mutual benefits of such visits. "Having international groups like those from Poland on our campus brings diversity and enriches the educational environment for our students and faculty," he noted. "The discussions were particularly valuable, offering new perspectives and challenging universally accepted frameworks. Teaching such an interactive group was a pleasure." Dr. Nicolas Chevrollier highlighted the importance of understanding different narratives in the context of sustainability transitions. "Businesses in the Netherlands operate in an international context, and these study trips provide exposure to different practices and narratives. Teaching these students provided solid insights, particularly about the forces at play in their own country.

Company visits: practical insights Visits to different companies formed a cornerstone of the immersion program. The visit to Shimano, located on the High Tech Campus Eindhoven, offered insights into how the local authorities and the management team created an innovative cluster. It also provided a real-world example of how flexibility is essential in dealing with challenges like COVID-19 and geopolitical tensions. Also, the visit to ECT Rotterdam provided interesting findings; “Understanding the efforts in terms of sustainability and digitalization at places like the port of Rotterdam makes the conceptual exchanges real and helps in becoming a better leader," Dr. Chevrollier added.
