Bank Account
Dutch bank account
Scholars who do not have a SEPA* account in another EU country are recommended to have a Dutch bank account.
If you do not already have a SEPA-account in an EU country, we strongly advise you to open a Dutch Bank Account after your arrival to facilitate money withdrawals, buying everyday products, and/or (international) transactions.
To create an account with a Dutch bank, you'll usually need a BSN (social security number), which is granted once you register with your local municipality. However, each bank may have its own set of requirements. The most significant are:
- A valid identity document (for non-EU students/scholars: passport).
- A Dutch address for the duration of your stay.
- A proof of employment or university enrollment.
Please look into your options to see which one is the greatest fit for you. The big three banks in The Netherlands are:
- ABN AMRO Bank : abnamro.nl/en/international-students/
- ING Bank: ing.nl/particulier/student/student-english/
- Rabobank : rabobank.nl/welcome-international-students-and-expats/
*SEPA stands for Single Euro Payments Area.
