Biography

The only way out is through – Robbert Frost

Dr. Lonneke Frie is a visiting fellow at the Center for Strategy, Organization and Leadership. Her research areas are flex expertise, entrepreneurial cognition and behavior and futurizing.

For Frie, Nyenrode is the place where science, education and business come together in a meaningful way. It is the place where she experiences that tradition and innovation challenge you to get the best out of yourself and each other. This means that the participants in our programs really make a difference in organizations. She is proud of her contribution to the Specialist Program. Nyenrode was the first business school in the Netherlands to offer a program for top specialists who shape their careers as thought leaders.

Frie started her career after graduating cum laude with a degree in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Amsterdam and the University of Tokushima, Japan. She had specialized in the question of how someone becomes an expert and how algorithms can simulate the thinking of experts. With this knowledge, she started her career as an architect and project manager of international training and development programs and change trajectories at PwC, IBM, Deutsche Telekom, Danone, Rabobank and various SMEs in roles such as entrepreneur, managing consultant, HRD specialist and HR business partner.

In the 20 years that she worked for these organizations, she became fascinated by the question of what causes some experts to get stuck in their work during their careers and how others constantly renew themselves. This was the reason for a PhD project that she started in 2017 from The Hague University of Applied Sciences and Radboud University in addition to her work as an HRM senior lecturer and entrepreneur. In December 2023, she received her PhD from Radboud University for her dissertation: From expert to flexpert: How workers meet new expertise needs throughout their careers (supervision team: Prof. dr. Beatrice van der Heijden, Dr. Hubert Korzilius and Dr. Ellen Sjoer).

This PhD research forms the basis for the research she is currently doing at The Hague University of Applied Sciences on the use of flexpertise in sustainability transitions, and the research on 'the art of knowing before others do' (the ability to foresee business opportunities and Human Capital challenges) with Prof. dr. Pascale Peters (Nyenrode). Lonneke's research is characterized by the application of system dynamics and a multidisciplinary approach. She uses these lenses to understand the complexity and interplay of human thought processes, perceptions, emotions and a changing self-image with which people adapt to (or have difficulty with) changing circumstances. She translates the insights from her research into practical solutions for the business with her boardroom consultancy firm OSHI, which she founded with Nyenrode alumnus and entrepreneur Otto Uijttewaal.

International activities

As a researcher, she is a member of the Careers Division of the Academy of Management (USA) and presents her research at conferences of the internationally operating Dutch HRM Network and the European Association of Work and Organizational Psychology.

In her former role as senior lecturer at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, she has set up strategic partnerships with foreign universities, including the European University of Applied Sciences (EUFH), Hochschule Rhein-Waal and FH Campus Vienna.

Interests

Lonneke loves outdoor sports (tennis, hockey, snowboarding, skating) and starts the day with yoga to stay flexible and balanced. She enjoys taking road trips and hiking in nature with her family and friends. Every week she can be found in the studio of artist Annemarie Petri in The Hague.
