Dr. Yulia Levashova is an associate professor at Nyenrode Business University. She is part of Nyenrode's Faculty Research Center for Entrepreneurship, Governance & Stewardship. She is also an Associate Research Fellow at Utrecht University.
Levashova studied Russian law in Saratov State Law Academy and obtained her BA degree from the University College Roosevelt and a master’s degree in law from Utrecht University. In 2018 she defended her PhD dissertation ‘The Right of States to Regulate in their Public Interest and the Right of Investors to Receive Fair and Equitable Treatment’ at Utrecht University.
She has been working at Nyenrode University since 2010. Her main research focus is on the legal aspects of foreign direct investment and corporate social responsibility (CSR). She has working on numerous multidisciplinary research projects, e.g. on illegal timber, case studies on South African government, and a business case for biodiversity (co-authoring the final reports).
Levashova gives substance to Nyenrode's mission and core values through:
- Leadership: to share my research that has societal and practical implications, e.g. presenting the proposal for reforms in international investment law at the 2018 UN Forum on Business and Human Rights.
- Entrepreneurship: to generate novel research ideas.
- Stewardship: to supervise the thesis projects of Master students.
Since 2021, Levashova has been Director of Dispute Prevention Program of the Asia Pasific FDI Network. She is a member of the Board with eight elected directors serving a three-year term and working in the field of trade and investment.
Levashova was a legal consultant to the UNCTAD on investment issues and has contributed to the 2019 World Investment Report. Levashova is the author of numerous publications in the field of international investment law, including the book “The Right of States to Regulate in International Investment Law: The Search for Balance between Public Interest and Fair and Equitable Treatment” (2019) published in the International Arbitration Law Library series by Wolters Kluwer. Levashova is also an editor to a special issue about SEZs and investment law and the volume on investment law and the environment.
International activities
Levashova has organized multiple international conferences, including the seminar during the 2018 World Investment Forum in Geneva. Over the period between 2012-2019, she has been a visiting scholar at the European University Institute, Italy, Ghent University, and the Max Planck Institute, Germany.
Interests
Drawing in an impressionist style and play outdoors with her kids.
