Barbara Bier has been (re)appointed Professor of Corporate Governance at Nyenrode Business University with effect from 1 June. She is part of the Nyenrode Faculty Expertise Centre Entrepreneurship, Governance & Stewardship.
In addition to her Professorship at Nyenrode, Barbara Bier remains associated as a counsel with the legal and notarial firm Stibbe, where she was previously a partner and civil-law notary. She has worked within corporate law since 1988 and thus has extensive experience in advising national and international (listed) clients on corporate law, corporate governance and ESG.
Barbara Bier received her doctorate in Rotterdam (2003) with the thesis 'Distributions to Shareholders'. That is also the title of her latest book, to be published in autumn 2023.
In addition to the above activities, she is, among other things, a member of the expert group on modernisation of NV law, and has been a member of various editorial boards and committees in the field of corporate law over the years. She regularly publishes on various corporate law topics, in particular on capital protection.
Previously (2011 to 2019), Barbara Bier was Professor of Corporate Law & Corporate Governance at Nyenrode Business University. In 2012, she delivered her oration entitled 'The value of the shareholder'.
Barbara Bier is looking forward to working at Nyenrode, together with colleagues from different disciplines, on developments within Corporate Governance, certainly also with a strong focus on ESG and sustainability issues.
I am very happy about my return to Nyenrode as Professor of Corporate Governance. Fantastic to be able to add my legal expertise again to the knowledge and expertise of my colleagues in the governance field and to teach, discuss and conduct research on this together.
Henk Kievit, director of the Nyenrode Faculty Expertise Centre Entrepreneurship, Governance & Stewardship:
"Barbara has an extensive track record in corporate law. With her research and teaching skills, her practical experience at Stibbe and her expertise in the fields of corporate governance, ESG, capital protection rules, and the liability of directors and supervisors, I would like to welcome her (once more) to Nyenrode and to the Nyenrode Corporate Governance Institute."
