Students Dies 24
Publication date: 11/21/2024

On November 20, 2024 Nyenrode Business University celebrated its 78th Dies Natalis. Members of the Nyenrode community, including students, alumni and staff gathered in large numbers to celebrate this special anniversary.

After the musical opening by Youth Orchestra Jonge Strijkers, Rector Prof. Dr. Barbara Majoor addressed the attendees. The theme of the celebration, ‘Leaders of the Future', was central to her speech. She reflected on Nyenrode's rich tradition of educating 'responsible leaders' with a focus on Nyenrode's core values: Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Stewardship. And precisely those core values, Majoor argued, provide excellent direction for the leaders of the future. Their biggest challenges are to continuously adapt to the ever faster changing world and make sustainable decisions that transcend corporate interests. In the future, these values will continue to guide Nyenrode and its alumni to make a positive impact on the world around us and to inspire future generations to do the same.

How do you get the best out of yourself, for yourself and for others?

After the opening, Prof. Dr. Nick van Dam shared his views on the skills and mindset needed by future leaders, during an inspiring and interactive session. He emphasized the importance of personal growth and striving to be the best version of yourself, which makes an impact both individually and socially.

Van Dam discussed the important pillars for leadership: body, mind, meaning and work environment. Health and adequate sleep are essential for effective leadership. Lifelong learning keeps the brain sharp and relevant in a dynamic world. Sense of purpose provides energy and direction, while a positive work environment encourages innovation and productivity.

NCV, JCV and VAS board chairs also shared their insights on leadership. Van Dam closed with a call to reflect on where you can really make a difference, not only for yourself but especially for others.

Alumnus of the Year Andy Bender: great in all modesty

After Nick van Dam's contribution, Prof. Dr. Désirée van Gorp announced the winner of the title of Alumnus of the Year: Andy Bender. The jury praised him as a modest but great leader. With his commitment to sustainable growth in the pharmaceutical sector, his involvement in social initiatives such as chairing the Netherlands-America Foundation, and his efforts to make scholarships possible for new Nyenrode students, Bender is a true source of inspiration. In addition, the the jury appreciates his unconditional support for research with impact.

“Andy Bender is an example of what a 'responsible leader for a sustainable future' can look like!”
